TERRARIUMS BY 1012 TERRA

The name of the brand “[ 10¹² ] TERRA” was inspired by the number of cells produced per day (10¹²) and glass cases called terrarium, made for collecting and showcasing plants. Terrariums have definitely had their crafty moment in recent years. It’s not that there’s anything wrong with these glass-domed wonderlands, but they definitely reached a saturation point. Founded in Japan by Daisuke Tsumanuma and Kenichi Yamada, these glass and chrome terrariums are handmade to order and bring modernity to the art of showcasing plants. 1012 Terra evolved from a desire to create products that would show the constant changes of life. Most terrariums hold an abundance of life, from the plants themselves to a combination of moss, rocks, dirt, and coal that form a base to hold the plants aloft. Though 1012 has their own version of a traditional terrarium in the form of a sawed-off hexahedron, their core collection features a series of rectangular vessels that hold just the plant itself above a small basin of water. There’s something so pure and interesting about seeing a plant showcased in this way—in all its naked, root-adorned glory—that makes the terrariums of yore, with their overabundance of greenery and kitschy adornments, truly seem like relics from the past.
