Would you want gesture-only control over your TV? You’ve misplaced your remote before and have felt too lazy to get up in search of it. What if you could simply switch channels with a wave of your hand? EyeSight Mobile Technologies has teamed up with Innodigital to create the nTobeBox, a set-top box that allows you to interact with your TV in an entirely hands-on/gadget-free way. The nTobeBox, running on Android’s Ice Cream Sandwich OS, turns any ordinary TV into a SmartTV that goes past conventional televised broadcast viewing, but allows for streaming content, apps, video calls, Internet connectivity and intuitive hand gesture recognition.
EyeSight’s technology allows “users comprehensive control over every aspect of Innodigital’s set-top box,” the company said in a press release. Both hand gestures and hand tracking enable virtual mouse control, yielding full control over the TV as if one were using a handheld remote. In the coming years, Innodigital is seeking to work with TV providers to package the box with a digital television subscription.
EyeSight’s technology may be utilized in the control of TV functions and features where gesture recognition takes the form of fingertip tracking among others. This allows for virtual remote-control functions from afar, even in a dynamic multi-person environment using eyeSight’s face detection capabilities.
Also with computers, eyeSight’s Touch Free solution allows for an effortless intake of digital media, even in a comfortable “lean back” position. For instance you may easily control the volume while watching a movie, skip to the next track when playing music, scroll to the next page on an e-book, all with the natural gestures of a hand.
