hey took the idea of a library and flipped it, quite literally, on its side, sure, it’s a design gimmick, but also one that makes good business sense and just might become a recognizable branding signature. Behold, the seamless combination of three of our favorite things: books, caffeinated beverages, and odd design. No, you’re not hallucinating. This really is a Manhattan coffee shop (a branch of the D’Espresso chain) decorated to look like a library turned on its side. Fast Company Design report that “the books” are actually tiles printed with sepia-toned photos of bookshelves at a local travel bookstore that ring the room, including the floor, walls and ceiling.” The wall on the left (or should we say the floor?) bears a “dark hardwood herringbone pattern.” Another awesome detail: The light fixtures hang sideways from a wall whose windows look like skylights. The client approached nemaworkshop with a single espresso bar existing and the ambition to build an espresso empire. For the location for the second shop, on Madison and backs up to Grand Central Terminal, nemaworkshop and the client agreed that the design needed to be immediately striking to the goal-oriented suits and wandering tourists alike. So next time you are visiting NY we invite you to visit this coffe shop. To get in touch with the architects below you will find their contact and website.
