ith its vivid, stunning colors, your first reaction to Watch Us! might be one of cheerful excitement rather than arousal. The two will likely become (quite pleasantly) mixed, however, once you begin to explore the book. Full of a feeling of energetic sensuality, illustrator Jacob Mott’s images aren’t quite as exaggerated or dramatic as Manga, but they certainly share aspects of the popular Japanese style of illustration- most noticeably a sense of energy and ability to capture your attention. Mott’s guys aren’t just incredibly gorgeous and sexy, they’re also full of life. His creations pop, appearing as if they’re ready to jump from their pages. Aside from the beautiful artistic aspect of his drawings, Mott also has an amazing way of bringing a strong sense of personality and emotion to the characters he draws. His images are surprisingly realistic, and yet they’re completely fantastical and clearly “created,” which simply shows how skilled he is at his craft. Much like a book of male erotic photography, Watch Us! is a collection of images; the book itself doesn’t tell a story- at least not one that the artist is simply pushing upon the viewer. Within many images, however, lie clear backgrounds about the character or characters and the situation in which they’re in. Given how individual images immediately draw the eye – asking to be explored in more detail – you’ll likely find yourself creating back-stories and ’filling in the blanks’ of the more fleshed-out pictures. Should you find yourself falling for one of his guys, don’t worry- they all make multiple appearances, offering you the chance to explore your relationship with them more completely. An excellent, high quality and beautiful volume of striking – and provocative – images, Watch Us! is one of the finest examples of male erotic illustration in the Bruno Gmunder portfolio. Fans of the genre will be thrilled, and even those who may previously have lacked interest in images of “drawn men” will be impressed- and likely more than a bit excited. So deutlich müsste der Comic-Zeichner das gar nicht aufs Cover schreiben, denn man kann ohnehin nicht anders, als in WATCH uS! zu blättern. Amerikanischer Bubblegum-Stil ist unverkennbar die Grundlage von Motts Illustrationen, aber er versteht es stilsicher, einen klebrigen Beigeschmack zu vermeiden. Einflüsse aus japanischen Manga-Comics und die unverblümte, bisweilen derbe Darstellung männlicher Sexualität runden das Ganze zu einer schmackhaften Mischung ab. Comic-Fans wird bei den meisterhaften Zeichnungen ohnehin warm ums Herz werden schließlich scheint die Sonne Kaliforniens aus ihnen zu strahlen.
