Home fitness equipment usually looks as if it belongs in a torture chamber – chunky and heavy, it often leads a shadowy existence in the guest room or basement. That’s hardly surprising in view of the fact that most gym equipment is developed for use in professional fitness centers. The designers at Lunar deliberately set out to change this state of affairs. Accordingly, they have brought together the traditionally contrasting themes of fitness and stylish living in the form of new design objects that are as avant-garde as they are aesthetic. Matthis Hamann, one of Lunar Europe’s two managing partners, explains the concept: “Our goal was to create highly functional fitness equipment which, besides its sporting uses, will adorn any living room in the same way as an aesthetic sculpture. The objects thus combine ‘life’ and ‘style’ in the best possible sense.”
Lunar’s approach with the Vela cycle trainer challenges current design expressions with a functional yet avant-garde aesthetic. The wire-suspended disc rib affords a perfect fit for every user. Beautiful projections around the bike create an immersive training experience and give performance feedback during training. When it’s not being used, the cycle becomes a sculpture that reflects the user’s passion for their lifestyle trough outstanding design.
The same transformation of form and function is achieved in the “Nova” climbing wall. It consists of textured panels with interestingly illuminated cut-outs that not only use ambient lighting to create a decorative pattern but serve as practical climbing holds as well. When combined with a specially developed smartphone application, the furniture-cum-luminaire is transformed into an individual piece of high-tech fitness equipment with a wide range of functions. An innovative lighting concept, for instance, guides the climber through varied routes with different levels of difficulty. Thanks to sensors in the climbing wall, the user can also record and analyze his training sessions via the smartphone app – for a holistic workout in a stylish home.
