The Lesen Lounge is a diminutive zine library that gets around town hooked up to a bicycle. The creation of independent publishing lover, Leah Buckareff, the rolling collection boasts over 50 titles—“Radical Mycology” by the Spore Liberation Front among them—and moves from park to park in Berlin spreading its glorious oddities. “We open up in neighbourhood parks on the weekends and offer anyone who wishes to explore the world of zines an opportunity to browse our collection with works by zinesters from all over the world. We announce our dates, times, and locations and of course, the lounge opens weather permitting.” But what’s a zine ? A zine is an independently produced publication. most often they are self- or hand-made books that vary in content, but usually house the creators’ personal thoughts, ideas, or artwork both in text and images. It’s a special art form with a very long tradition as the simple format of a zine makes it an accessible medium for creative output. The zine as we know it today has a beginning that is often attributed to various d.i.y. (do it yourself) movements in the 1980’s and 90’s. Technology has opened up the possibilities of form and aesthetic, but for the most part, the output remains an archive of self-expression. A really great idea, that we hope to see it allover the countries. Also the presence of a mobile / bike library in the park is not bad.
