DAVIDELFIN: The Spanish Artist Turned Fashion Designer

Davidelfin, a Spanish artist turned fashion designer explained that he “came to the fashion through painting.” Like many designers, he escaped into the portal through the art realm and become transported into a different design sector – but “is it all the same?” The introspective fashion designer’s new collection, titled Katharsis, is made of classic white collared shirts with squares of color down the center, over sized colorful zippers and buttons, sheer blouses, and Bauhaus-esque vests, all finished with Dr. Martins & Louboutins on the runway.

The garments  are like blocks of color painted on a blank canvas. Maybe it is all the same? Instead of painting portraits, Davideflin is painting clothes. “I came to the fashion through painting. In 1999, after several individual and collective exhibitions, and having worked on paper, canvas, wood or cardboard, I decided to use military clothes second hand as new support. Shirts, pants, underwear, shoes, belts…

There was a memory, a fingerprint. Names of the people that inhabited them, grease stains, stitching… everything revolved around thinking, life and works (is it all the same?) of German artist Joseph Beuys, and which included left hand writing texts. This personal typography has become a recognizable mark of our work.

This personal typography has become a recognizable mark of our work. The editors of fashion and some emerging pathways were interested in my work, and although this was not a goal, I ended up accepting demand and I discovered a fascinating environment where to translate my concerns.

I felt I had found my place as if it were an unknown knowledge. Emotions remain the motor of my work. Everything for doing, everything for giving.” In 2001 Davidelfín brand was created by Bimba Bosé, Deborah Postigo, Gorka Postigo, Diego Postigo and I.

It all started as a plural medium where to express our needs, involving fashion, photography, architecture and video. Since September 2002 we present our collections in Cibeles Madrid Fashion week, and since February 2009 in the New York Fashion week.( Davidelfin ) For more information just follow the link below.
