THE LEAF BED by Juan Pablo Naranjo and Jean-Christophe Orthlieb

he global tragedies like the tsunami in Japan and earthquake in Haiti really emphasize how much need there is for innovative relief products. LeafBed, Humanitech’s 2010 first prize winner for innovation in humanitarian emergency situations, is a sustainable bedding solution that explores the concept of adaptability by providing ready-made designs using local resources. Designed by Juan Pablo Naranjo and Jean-Christophe Orthlieb, the leaf bed is a cardboard bed that is meant to provide temporary use for emergency sheltering.  What’s amazing about this design is that it can be transformed to serve multiple purposes such as creating a table. NOCC, the designer’s organization, was awarded Humanitech’s 2010 first prize for the Leafbed.  The Leafbed is already being used across the globe in humanitarian efforts.  It’s sustainable, adaptive, and it is created using local resources.
