as destined to be a perfumer — the Chinese character for Yosh means “fragrant.” She apprenticed at an artisanal perfumery in Aspen, but it wasn’t until she moved to the Bay Area and worked at Dave Eggers’ 826 Valencia pirate store that she started composing her own scents. She blended a series of piratical themed perfumes, with names like Swashbuckler, Buccaneer, and Buxom, to be sold alongside the peg leg sizing chart and mermaid repellant. Requests followed from literary mavericks like JT LeRoy and William T. Vollman (she crafted him a scent called Carnage, with notes of lemongrass and blue tansy). Now her perfumes are sold at Colette and Fred Segal, and worn on the pulse points of Madonna and Nicole Kidman. Today she offers a workshop where you can learn the history of perfume, and formulate your own personal elixir.
